Venturing Crew 7 was founded August 1, 2004 and is primarily an outdoor oriented Crew which puts the focus on FUN. Venturing is a co-ed program for young people ages 14 – 20, although those active with Crew 7 are primarily high school students. The Crew welcomes 7th and 8th graders to participate as guests until they are old enough to officially join. As a guest, you participate in all of the Crew activities.
The Crew plans many fun and exciting activities every year like hiking, backpacking, camping, canoeing/kayaking, sailing, rock climbing, scuba diving and any other adventure the group chooses.
Venturing empowers its members to create their own ideal activities and execute them. Each person is a key contributing member. The Crew is led by elected Officers and each activity is led by a member who chairs that event. All members are given opportunities to lead and learn.
When you join Venturing Crew you quickly develop a close network of friends. Members are welcoming. You get to know one another as you work together and support one another through all aspects of planning and executing the Crew activities. Experience is not a requirement to join – But a spirit for adventure and a willingness to try something new is. Members learn as they try different activities.
Each year there is an opportunity to go on a High Adventure which provides further team-building opportunities, new experiences, leadership development and lifelong memories. It takes a lot of planning and many years we have been able to achieve some outstanding High Adventures.
Our first High Adventure was in 2006 when we traveled to Acadia National Park. We saw the sunset and sunrise Cadillac Mt, explored the coast via sea kayaks, biked the carriage trail, went on several hikes.
In the summer of 2008 the crew made their first trip to Teton and Yellowstone National parks. We spent nearly 2 weeks exploring these two national treasures.
In 2013 we learned how to sail by taking a weekend keel boat sailing course and also completing several open water dives on our way to be come Certified Scuba Divers.
In April 2014, the Crew went to the BSA High Adventure Base on the Florida Keys were we spent the week on a sail boat, traveled to reefs around the Keys and made 13 Scuba dives, including a night dive and a pre-dawn dive. We saw thousand of colorful fish, turtles, shark, dolphins and many other sea creatures.
During the summer of 2015 the crew went on a high adventure trip to Yellowstone, the Grand Tetons, and Glacier National Park.
For the summer of 2016 the crew planned a high adventure trip to Acadia National Park where the activities included biking, hiking and sea kayaking.
During April school vacation in 2017, the crew planned a week trip to Washington DC with a day spent at Gettysburg. There were lots of sites and things to do during the day and camping at nights at the Greenbelt Campground. During the summer of 2017, the crew planned a trip to Yosemite, Sequoia and King Canyon National Parks in California. This 11 day trip was jam packed with lots of sites to see, places to explore, hikes to take and we brought back lifetime of memories.
The summer of 2018 the crew traveled to Canada. We experienced the tidal change at the Bay of Fundy, traveled to Nova Scotia were we hiked to sites along the Cabot Trail, discovered an amazing beach and caught a ferry to Newfoundland. Newfoundland had so much for us to see and do. We primarily visited Gros Moren National Park and ventured to the far northern most point to see the remains of a Viking settlement.
The summer of 2019 again took us abroad, this time to Iceland, the island of Fire and Ice. We spend 11 amazing days traveling along the Ring Road and discovering so many sights, and sounds. We saw and learned much about Volcanoes, hiked on a glacier, crossed the Arctic Circle, and spent several unforgettable hours in Myvatn Natural Hot Baths.
For 2020, the crew planned a short trip to Gettysburg during April vacation and then at the end of school travel to the Grand Canyons and more. Unfortunately these trips were cancelled due to COVID and it was a while before we were able to hold our adventures again.
Summer of 2023 found the crew once again visiting the Grand Tetons and Yellowstone National Parks. It was with a new group of youth and they found some new things and places to hike and explore.
2024 we have many more new members as we plan our trip for this year to visit the end of Cape Cod where we went kayaking in the marsh off Provincetown, hiked the dune shack trail, walked to the beach and toured the Highland light house then headed off to Nantucket for a week of challenges and adventure. We had a great hike on the bluff of Sconset, biked to the beach, watched a sunset on the western most shore, toured the town, got pushed around by the wind while kayaking and paddle boarding and enjoyed a great sail on the Endeavor. A wonderful 10 days!
The Crew holds a monthly meeting, generally the first Sunday of the month. Additionally they plan and run at least one activity a month.
